Horn received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering, summa cum laude, from Texas A&M University in 1979 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1983. After graduation from Harvard, he was an energy investment banker at Lehman Brothers in New York and Houston prior to becoming a principal in private equity investing in 1991.
