PETE322 Geostatistics

This is an introductory undergraduate level course in geostatistics that covers the basic concepts in spatial variability, reservoir modeling, and uncertainty analysis. The course is designed to introduce students to characterization of spatial uncertainty that is typically seen in description of subsurface media and hydrocarbon reservoirs. Basic concepts in probability and statistics are introduced and applied to modeling and analysis of uncertainty in geological media. Specific topics include analysis spatial relationship, variogram estimation and modeling, spatial prediction (kriging), and conditional simulation.

PETE689 Reservoir Characterization and Forecasting

This graduate level course in reservoir characterization and forecasting integrates three important aspects of reservoir development and management: i) reservoir description and modeling; ii) reservoir model updating; and iii) model predictive reservoir control and management. The emphasis of the course is on combining spatial continuity models with various sources of data, including dynamic production data, to construct predictive reservoir models that can be used with model predictive control approaches to guide future reservoir development strategies. The course covers a broad range of topics including modeling spatial variability, kriging, , sequential simulation, object-based and multipoint geostatistics, reservoir parameterization, production data integration, and model-predictive control and production optimization.

PETE689/CHEN689 CO2 Capture and Uses (Sequestration and EOR)

This is a team-taught graduate course that covers important topics in CO2 capture and uses, including sequestration and enhanced oil recovery. Several aspects of a CO2 sequestration project including capture, separation, transport to injection site, site characterization, injectivity, modeling CO2 fate and transport after injection, monitoring and risk assessment, regulation and economics are discussed. I teach the lectures related to the modeling and simulation of CO2 migration in geological formations.
